History

San Jose Symphonic Choir, one of the country’s most successful volunteer choral societies, was formed in 1924 under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce as the San Jose Municipal Chorus, with LeRoy V. Brant as Music Director. The first concert consisted of a presentation of “The Rose Maiden.” Brant, with kindness and passion, led the Chorus for approximately 40 years. During the 1960’s, Reginald Greenbrook took over the baton and led the San Jose Chorus through the mid ‘70’s. Around this time, the chorus went through several changes. It organized into a nonprofit corporation called San Jose Symphonic Choir and acquired a new music director, Don Haneke. Maestro Leroy Kromm took over the baton in 1985 and the Choir has flourished under his inspired direction.

The Choir presents major concerts in the fall, winter, and spring, encompassing choral music of many different composers and musical styles. One of the highlights of the Choir’s season is the popular “You-Sing-It Messiah,” which annually attracts approximately 1000 people to downtown San Jose. In 1996, the Choir performed the world premiere of Requiem for Lost Children, written by local composer Sondra Clark; and in 2003, they participated in the world premier of Sisters, a work by Bay area resident Craig Bohmler, to honor San Jose and her “Sister Cities,” commissioned by Mission Chamber Orchestra. In 1998, the Choir performed Brahms’ German Requiem at Carnegie Hall in New York and returned there in June 2002 to perform the Mozart Requiem, conducted by John Rutter. The Choir has performed with the Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra, directed by Maestro George Cleve, including performances of the Mozart Requiem. They have toured in Spain, France, Israel, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand, including performances in the Sydney Opera House. Members of the Choir toured and performed in cathedrals throughout Italy in the summer of 2003 and joined with the Monterey Symphony Chorus in a Scandinavian performance tour in the summer of 2005.

The Choir is dedicated to presenting choral music of the highest quality to enrich, educate and entertain our audience.
